Remembrance Day Display

What we know today as Remembrance Day, 11th November each year, used to be called Armistice Day.

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. This marked the end of World War 1.

After the end of the Second World War, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day. Armistice Day was no longer an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead.

In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute's silence at 11 am on 11 November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts

This display reflects the changed attitudes and the ways in which this day was remembered over the years. This displayed history is part of the memorabilia held at the Lara RSL Sub Branch Museum.

PETER FITZSIMONS – JAMES COOK

The name Captain James Cook is one of the most recognisable in Australian history - an almost mythic figure who is often discussed, celebrated, reviled and debated. Some 240 years after his death, Peter FitzSimons reveals what kind of man James Cook was at heart - his strengths, his weaknesses, his passions and pursuits, failures and successes.
Peter FitzSimons is Australia's bestselling non-fiction writer and the author of a number of highly successful books. His passion is to tell Australian stories, our own stories: of great men and women, of stirring events in our history.
