Geelong Regional Libraries’ Director of Community Experience, David Semmens will step up into the role of Acting CEO from 28 February 2026, until a permanent CEO is appointed.

Current CEO Vanessa Schernickau recently announced her departure so she can undertake a PhD.

Councillor Liz Pattison, Geelong Regional Libraries Corporation Board Chair, congratulated David on his appointment, and said it was recognition of his experience as an executive leader.

“The Board recognises David’s strategic and systems thinking approach to leading change, and that he brings strong governance, operational and stakeholder leadership experience to the Acting CEO role,” Cr Pattison said.

“David has more than 18 years’ experience across local government and regional service organisations. He has led large, multidisciplinary portfolios spanning libraries, community learning, sport and recreation, arts and culture, and community support services.”

The Board has commenced recruitment for the permanent Chief Executive Officer position, with an announcement to be made in due course. 

Vanessa Schernickau will undertake a PhD by research at Melbourne University that considers the role of public libraries in responding to disinformation, misinformation, and malign influence.
