We are delighted to announce some great news: we’re removing overdue fines… for good! From Saturday 11 December 2021, Geelong Regional Libraries is joining a world-wide movement of public libraries which have abolished library fines. We recognise that library fines are a financial barrier for some people to be able to engage with the library and continue to be active library members. Removing fines removes a barrier to participation – which is good for the community, and good for the library. Ultimately, fines are contrary to the core purpose of public libraries – to provide free and universal access to information. All existing fines will be automatically wiped from our library members’ accounts, and no overdue fines will accrue going forward. Due dates will still apply for borrowed items, and borrowing privileges may be revoked when items become overdue. So we do encourage you to return your books before the due date! However, to ensure you have plenty of time to get through your reading list this summer, all items borrowed from Thursday 9 December onwards will have a due date of no earlier than Monday 31 January 2022. Please note that fees will still apply for damaged or lost books. If you have any questions, please speak with a friendly staff member at your local library. Please note, this process may take some time to be reflected on your library account, but rest assured all fines will be wiped. There’s truly never been a better time to return to the library!
