1000 Books Before School

Children aged 0-5 are invited to join in the Victoria wide, 1000 Books Before School program. Get involved and help your child to get ready for school!

Sharing stories with babies and young children for just 10 minutes each day provides them with a significant increase in their readiness for school and helps to develop important literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading. It’s easy to do:

• Read 3 books each day ~ finish in less than 1 year!
• Read 1 book each day ~ finish in less than three years!

Every book counts

• Your favourite picture book one thousand times
• One thousand different books
• Hearing stories at Story Time, Toddler Time, Playgroup, Day Care, or Kindergarten
• Reading with another family member or friend
• Listening to an audio book

They all count every time!

How 1000 Books Before School works

• It’s free to register.
• Register at any of our libraries to receive your first Reading Record and reading kit. You can also download your Reading Record here!
• Mark, colour or place a sticker on your Reading Record each time you read together with your child.
• Each time you reach a milestone in your Reading Record, bring it in to any of our libraries for a special reward.
• Every book counts!
• The program finishes once your child reaches 1000 books, or starts school.
